Sensa is a weight-loss powder that you can add to food. It is intended to produce an aroma to reduce your appetite. The theory behind the product suggests you will eat less and eventually lose weight. As with any other weight-loss aid, you should always consult a doctor before using this product.

Theory

In an interview with a reporter from "Harper's Bazaar," Alan Hirsch, the creator of Sensa, explains that the powder is supposed to increase the hormone leptin to increase satiety, and decrease the hormone ghrelin to decrease appetite. Hirsch admits in the interview that there is no biochemical evidence to prove this process actually occurs when a person uses the product. Instead, Sensa is based on a theoretical construct of how people lose weight.

Use

The instructions for Sensa direct users to sprinkle the powder evenly over the entire outer surface of food. According to the Sensa website, the product works best if a person sprinkles the powder right before eating the food. Spraying a fine mist of water over the food can help the powder stick. Sensa powder should not influence the taste of the food. The powder is not intended for use with liquids.

Ingredients

Sensa powder contains maltrodextrin, which is derived from corn, and tricalcium phosphate. Tricalcium phosphate may cause unpleasant side effects, including nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, rash, mild decrease in blood pressure, joint pain or increase in urination, according to the Farlex Medical Dictionary. Inactive ingredients in the product include natural and artificial flavors, which may include soy and milk ingredients.

Effectiveness

The makers of Sensa conducted a study to demonstrate the effectiveness of the product. The study consisted of 1,436 participants that completed a six-month trial using the product as directed. At the end of the study, the average weight loss was 30.5 lb. It is unclear if the results of the study would apply to a larger population. It is also questionable if the weight loss achieved is sustainable, notes MayoClinic.com. In addition, keep in mind that due to individual circumstances, your individual response to the product may vary from the participants in the study.

Considerations

Most experts agree that it takes the right ratio of diet and exercise to lose weight and keep it off. Although it may not hurt to try a weight-loss aid like Sensa, you may obtain the same or better results simply by reducing the amount of calories you consume in food and beverages and increasing the amount of calories you burn through exercise.
