Bill and T. J. Palmer opened their first Applebee's restaurant, called Applebee's Rx for Edibles and Elixirs, in Atlanta, Georgia in 1980. As of 2011, it is one of the largest casual dining restaurant chains in the world. Applebee's offers an extensive menu that features a variety of salads, sandwiches and entrees. Applebee's Oriental Chicken Rollup includes fried chicken with Asian greens and almonds tossed in an Oriental dressing and served in a flour tortilla. This entree is high in both calories and fat. But you may be able to save some calories and fat by requesting the fried chicken be replaced with grilled chicken to create a grilled Oriental Chicken Rollup.
Calories
A regular Oriental Chicken Rollup with the fried chicken from Applebee's contains 1,160 calories. Fried chicken is a more calorie-dense food than grilled chicken. Replacing the fried chicken with grilled chicken may save you about 90 calories, creating a sandwich that contains 1,070 calories. Both sandwiches make high-calorie choices. If you follow a 2,000-calorie diet, this one sandwich will meet more than half your daily calorie needs.
Fat
You may be able to save a few grams of fat by requesting your Oriental Chicken Rollup be made with grilled chicken. One rollup with the grilled chicken is estimated to contain about 38 g of total fat and 8 g of saturated fat, meeting 58 percent of your daily value for fat and 40 percent of your daily value for saturated fat. While the grilled Oriental Chicken Rollup may be lower in fat than the original, with 60 g of total fat and 11 g of saturated fat, it is still a high-fat sandwich. Consuming high amounts of fat, specifically saturated fat, can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.
Carbohydrates and Protein
The Oriental Chicken Rollup is high in both carbohydrates and protein. One rollup made with grilled chicken contains an estimated 129 g of carbohydrates, 4 g of fiber and 48 g of protein. One sandwich meets more than 40 percent of your daily value for carbohydrates, and nearly 100 percent of your daily value for protein. While the sandwich does provide some fiber, it only meets 16 percent of your daily value for fiber.
Sodium
Like many of the items on the Applebee's menu, the Oriental Chicken Rollup is a very high-sodium menu choice. In fact, requesting grilled chicken over the traditional fried chicken may increase the sodium content of your sandwich by more than 1,000 mg. The original rollup contains 3,160 mg of sodium; the grilled chicken alternative may contain up to 4,250 mg of sodium. Either sandwich meets more than a day's worth of sodium.
