Frozen yogurt is a tangy yet sweet alternative to ice cream, and the popularity of frozen yogurt bars may inspire you to make your own frozen yogurt at home. Unlike ice cream, which starts with a cooked custard, frozen yogurt takes less time to chill and freeze. When you make your own frozen yogurt, you can be creative with your favorite flavors, control the quality of the ingredients and maybe even save money. Keep in mind that proper technique when making and chilling your frozen yogurt is essential for the yogurt's quality and safety.
Step 1
Pour the yogurt and sugar into the mixing bowl and whisk until thoroughly combined. Taste the mixture and add more sugar if you desire.
Step 2
Pour the mixture into the ice cream maker and process it according to the directions from the manufacturer.
Step 3
Spoon the frozen yogurt into the freezer-safe bowl, cover with the plastic wrap and place it in your freezer to chill for at least 2 hours.
Tips and Warnings
- Transport frozen yogurt in a closed cooler with ice packs to keep it as close to 40 degrees Fahrenheit as possible. Experiment with different flavors of yogurt. Add vanilla or orange extract to plain yogurt before freezing. Mash strawberries, raspberries or banana with the sugar before combining it with the yogurt for a fresh fruit frozen yogurt. Serve frozen yogurt with rum-poached pears or merlot-poached figs for an elegant dinner party dessert.
- Keep your frozen yogurt chilled in the freezer until right before serving. If your frozen yogurt is kept above 40 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 2 hours, throw it away. Do not refreeze it.
