The summer months lead many people outdoors for both entertainment and exercise. Others find it difficult to stay motivated for summer workouts with so many social events on the agenda. The hot weather also presents a potential hazard when exercising. Take safety precautions and find enjoyable workout options so you can fit exercise into your busy summer schedule.

Considerations

The weather on any given day affects the type of exercise you choose. When the temperature soars, stay indoors for your workout to avoid heat-related illnesses. Thunderstorms may also affect your plans for outdoor exercise during the summer months. You are more likely to work out if your exercise involves an activity you enjoy. Take advantage of the exercise opportunities distinct to the summer months, such as swimming outdoors.

Safety

The heat presents the biggest safety concern during the summer. Your body already heats up from the exercise. The heat of summer increases the impact on the heart and lungs. The perspiration process is often affected, especially in hot, humid conditions when sweat doesn't evaporate quickly. Excessive exercise in high temperatures can make the body's cooling process shut down. To avoid heat illnesses, time your workout for early morning or late evening, when the temperature is lower and there's less hot sunlight. Choose workout clothing that wicks the sweat away from your body. Lighter fabric colors absorb less sunlight to keep you cooler. Drink lots of water before you exercise. Continue drinking water during and after the workout so you don't dehydrate.

Exercise Options

To enjoy fresh air and warmer temperatures, take your normal aerobics workout outdoors. Practice your morning yoga in the backyard or at the park. Instead of running on the treadmill, take your run to local trails. Stop along the way to work in your strength training. For example, you might do dips on a park bench or do pull-ups on the monkey bars at the park. Bike rides also make for good exercise during the summer months. Find a trail that allows bike traffic and explore the area. You can also build your endurance by swimming at a local beach.

Motivation

Setting goals and rewarding yourself may help motivate you to stay active during the summer. Plan your workouts ahead of time so you don't get caught up in the busy days of summer. Reward yourself with a new summer outfit or free time lounging in the backyard after you exercise. Remind yourself that your summer workouts balance out the little food treats you enjoy during summer, like the occasional ice cream cone or blended fruit drink.
