Any exercise program that motivates you to move your body, improve your health and participate on a weekly basis has considerable benefits. Curves is a fitness studio that is motivating many women to participate in a physical activity. This women-only franchise has found its way into many cities across the United States and with its circuit-style workout is providing an effective exercise program.
The Workout
Curves franchise fitness centers use a circuit-training workout. The workout contains 12 exercise machines and 12 platforms upon which you walk, jog or jump. Curves workouts last approximately 25 minutes, and you alternate 30 seconds on an exercise machine with 30 seconds of stationary walking or jogging. Alternating strength-training with aerobic exercise for set time intervals is considered circuit-training.
The Fitness Center
Curves is a fitness center dedicated to the health and wellness needs of women. Often a social environment, you will meet other women as you complete the circular circuit. Music plays as you perform your exercises, and a voice over the loudspeaker will tell you when 30 seconds has passed and it is time to move to the next station. After your initial consultation, in which you learn how to use the equipment, you work out on your own.
The Research
The Curves website claims that its workout burns up to 500 calories for every 30-minute workout. However, the American Council on Exercise joined with researchers at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, to test the Curves claims. Subjects included 15 women ages 26 to 55 who performed the 30-minute Curves circuit workout. Researchers determined Curves is a moderate-intensity workout that burns approximately 184 calories in a 30-minute workout. This is comparable to walking at 4 mph for 30 minutes on a flat road.
The Benefits
Curves circuit workouts are a total body exercise program. You will strengthen your major muscle groups including your chest, back, arms, core and legs. You will also improve your cardiovascular health from the 30 second walking, jogging intervals. If you are active and have an improved fitness level, Curves might not give you the exercise intensity you desire. If you are new to exercise, Curves can be the place to provide you a comfortable, effective entrance into the fitness industry.
