Fish oil supplements may increase the amount of omega-3 fatty acids you ingest on a daily basis but may cause an allergic reaction if you're allergic to fish proteins or gelatin. If you notice that when you take fish oil your neck breaks out into a rash, you need to stop using the supplement and call your doctor. A neck rash from fish oil supplements is most likely hives -- a sign of an allergic reaction. If you have a known fish allergy, the Food Allergy Initiative recommends that you avoid the use of fish oil supplements. Before using fish oil to prevent or treat any condition, talk with your doctor.
Fish Oil Allergy
Medline Plus states that fish oil is likely safe for most people, but if you develop a neck rash, you should use caution while taking the supplement. A fish oil allergic reaction can cause a rash on your neck that could lead to more symptoms. A fish oil allergy occurs if your immune system doesn't identify the proteins in the supplement as safe for the body. The production of histamine in response to fish oil often causes irritation, inflammation and itching in the skin and other soft tissue.
Neck Rash
Hives can develop anywhere on the body, but hives from a food or supplement allergy typically form on the neck and face. Hives are identified by their appearance. They form in clusters of red, elevated welts that are flat on top and can migrate from one area of the body to another. Hives often develop in different shapes and sizes but will only have defined borders and are itchy. If the neck rash is accompanied with swelling in the lips, mouth, face or tongue you need to call 911. This is a sign of a severe allergic reaction that could lead to death if not treated.
Fish Allergy Relationship
Medline Plus states that if you have a fish or seafood allergy you should use caution while taking fish oil supplements. Although research and information are lacking, it is advisable to avoid fish oil and use a fish-free omega-3 supplement instead, such as flaxseed oil. The Food Allergy Initiative states while fish proteins are not found in fish oil supplements, small molecules of fish protein by-products may be present in the supplement.
Treatment
Avoid all fish products if you're allergic to fish. Common treatments for hives from an allergic reaction include an oral antihistamine and topical hydrocortisone cream. If you believe you're experiencing a severe allergic reaction, call 911 because you may need to be treated with epinephrine, a medication that alleviates symptoms of anaphylaxis.
