Grilled mussels are savory and nutritious. Mussels are a rich source of minerals, such as calcium, iron, magnesium and selenium. These shellfish also contain high amounts of vitamins, including riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid. Start by purchasing the freshest mussels you can find. Very fresh seafood usually tastes best, and grilling brings out the rich flavor of mussels. The heat of the grill opens the mussels as you cook them. The mussels in this preparation are topped with bread crumbs and herbs, which add zest and crispiness. You can serve this mussel preparation as a main course, appetizer or side dish.

Step 1

Preheat your outdoor or indoor grill to a medium-high heat or light the coals of your charcoal grill.

Step 2

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet. Stir in the minced garlic with a wooden spoon and simmer for one minute over medium heat.

Step 3

Stir in the bread crumbs and herbs a little at a time. Brown the mixture for two minutes, then add salt and pepper to taste. Set the herb-and-breadcrumb mixture aside.

Step 4

Place the mussels on the grill and cook over medium-high heat for approximately 10 minutes.

Step 5

Remove the open mussels from the heat with a pair of tongs and place them on a serving platter.

Step 6

Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the mussels with four of the lemon wedges. Garnish the serving platter with the remaining lemon wedges.

Step 7

Fill each open mussel with a dollop of the breadcrumb mixture using a spoon.

Step 8

Place the lemon wedges around the mussels on the serving platter.
