Acne breakouts can cause your skin to look splotchy and discolored, causing you to seek a remedy in topical creams and lotions. However, many commercial acne treatments contain ingredients that can dry out the skin. One solution is to alter your diet to include or eliminate foods that can help the clarity of your skin.

Vitamins

When your body is deficient in certain vitamins, it can cause your skin to not look its best. Eat a diet that is high in vitamin A and vitamin B-6. Vitamin A helps support proper hormone production, which prevents an overproduction of sebum, which causes oily skin. Vitamin A is found in carrots, squash, leafy greens and bananas. Vitamin B-6 helps balance hormones in the body, and is especially helpful in acne related to menstruation. Vitamin B-6 is found in whole grains, grains like rice and millet.

Minerals

Helpful minerals for skin include zinc, selenium and chromium. Zinc helps reduce redness and inflammation associated with acne breakouts and is found in nuts, whole grains and seeds. Selenium can help reduce acne scarring, allowing the complexion to return to a smoother, clearer state. Selenium is found in organ meats and fish.

Considerations

Consume a diet that is free of processed foods, which often contain artificial flavorings, colors, sugars and fats that can promote inflammation in the body that may cause acne breakouts to become worse. Eat a diet that is high in whole, natural foods and low in processed foods.

Warnings

Always check with your doctor or naturopath before changing your diet or adding supplements. If you experience a reaction from eating new foods or supplements, talk to your doctor or naturopath to see if you may be allergic to the new food.
