Many people associate vitamin D only with bone health. While vitamin D's role in your skeletal system is important, it's only one of the many roles that vitamin D plays in your body. Unfortunately, vitamin D deficiency has reached epidemic proportions, the Vitamin D Council reports. Taking a vitamin D supplement can benefit your body in a number of ways. As with all dietary supplements, check with your doctor to determine your vitamin D status and dosages appropriate for you.

Bone Health

Your body needs vitamin D to maximize the absorption and utilization of calcium. Also, vitamin D reduces the amounts of calcium that you lose in urine. Inadequate vitamin D can increase the risk of low bone mineral density and osteoporosis, the Office of Dietary Supplements reports. They add that vitamin D is only effective at promoting bone health if combined with calcium. Aim to consume calcium-rich foods like spinach and low-fat dairy products to boost vitamin D's bone building effects.

Cancer Risk

The Office of Dietary Supplements reports that poor vitamin D status is associated with a heightened risk of certain cancers, including cancer of the prostate and liver; however, they add that the relationship between vitamin D and cancer isn't yet clearly established. The Vitamin D Council notes that vitamin D supplementation can reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that can lead to peeling skin, pain, itching and anxiety. This disease afflicts more than 7 million people living in the United States, the National Psoriasis Foundation reports. Mayo Clinic states that the current body of scientific literature strongly supports vitamin D supplementation as an effective treatment for psoriasis.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a serious oral health problem that can cause premature tooth loss and chronic mouth pain. According to the Vitamin D Council, adequate vitamin D status can reduce gum inflammation and prevent tooth loss. They add that vitamin D works by helping your body produce a compound known as cathelicidin that destroys bad bacteria in your mouth.
