While some snowboarders prefer frontside trick variations, others opt to execute backside tricks on rails, ledges and ramps. When performing a rail slide in the backside position, approach the rail with the heel-edge of your snowboard parallel to the obstacle. If you ride with your right foot in the lead position, a backside spin will rotate in a counterclockwise direction.
Backside Lipslide
The backside lipslide is an elementary trick that you can perform on the polished rails of the terrain park. Approach the rail in the backside position with your snowboard parallel to the obstacle. Jump vertically over the top of the rail. Lift your knees while turning the board 90 degrees. According to pro snowboarder Josh Sherman, your board should be perpendicular to the rail throughout the backside lipslide. Look over your shoulder to spot your landing. Bend your knees to absorb the impact as you slide off the end of the rail.
Backside 180 Nose Grab
Beginner and intermediate snowboarders often execute the backside 180 nose grab off sloping kicker ramps carved from snow. Approach the ramp with a moderate amount of speed. Bend your knees as you begin to ascend the ramp wall, and extend your legs and jump as you reach the apex of the snow ramp. Lift your knees to soar above the riding terrain. Rotate your shoulders while extending your non-dominant hand towards the front of the board. Grab the nose while rotating the board 180 degrees. Bend your knees to absorb the shock of the landing.
Backside Nose Press
As opposed to a circular rail, learn the backside nose press on a flat ledge known as the dance floor. Ride toward the ledge with a moderate amount of speed. Approach the ledge in the backside position with the heel-edge of your board parallel to the obstacle. Extend your legs to jump over the top of the ledge. Pro snowboarder Ted Borland recommends leaning forward to land on the nose of the snowboard. Slide across the length of the ledge with the tail of the snowboard elevated above the obstacle.
Backside 720
The backside 720 is one of the more formidable snowboarding maneuvers. Utilize a specialized ramp known as the half pipe to execute this high-flying trick. Drop into the half pipe to increase your momentum. Lean back as you climb the steep wall of the ramp. Extend your legs to jump as you approach the apex of the wall. Turn your shoulders backside while rotating the board 720 degrees. Lower your eyes to the ramp to spot the landing. Bend your knees to absorb the landing impact.
