1. Dress In Layers
As you are ice skating, it is important that your clothes keep you warm and protected from the elements. But you must find the balance between staying warm and dry and overheating. If you are wearing too much clothing, you will start to sweat. This will leave you cold and dehydrated. The best way to avoid this problem is to dress in thin layers that are easily exchanged if you become too hot or too cold. Wear a sweat wicking base layer next to your skin. Layer sparingly over this base, especially if you are skating inside.
2. Waterproof Your Kids
When young children are learning to skate, dress them in a waterproof layer for the first few lessons. Children are not as naturally cautious as adults when learning new sports. As a result, they learn quickly, but sometimes they also fall down a lot in the process. If a child spends a lot of time on the ice without a waterproof layer, eventually the thin layer of water on the ice will soak through their clothes. They will get cold and tired quickly. Dress them in waterproof pants and a jacket.
3. Keep Moving
When you are actively exercising your muscles are moving and your body is working hard to pump blood more rapidly to distribute oxygen as your muscles get fatigued. This builds up your basal body temperature, making you less susceptible to becoming cold. So even though an ice rink is a cold environment, as long as you are moving you should stay reasonably warm. However, once you stop moving you are likely to become cold quickly. When you want to take a break, exit the ice and put on an extra layer while you rest. If there is a heated area available, stay there for the duration of your break to keep your muscles warm and limber.
4. Warm from the Inside Out
There's nothing like a hot drink on a cold day. If you are feeling continued chills, sometimes the best way to warm up is from the inside out. Bring a thermos of tea or cocoa and have a hot drink while you take a break. Also, be aware that you are burning calories to stay warm while you ice skate. Pack a small snack to fuel your warmth.
