The morning banana diet was created by a Japanese pharmacist named Sumiko Watanabe in an effort to help her husband, Hitoshi Watanbe, lose weight. The diet became so popular, that it led to a shortage of bananas in Japan, according to EveryDiet.org. Like the name states, the banana diet relies on bananas to promote weight loss.
Breakfast
Breakfast is the main focus on the banana diet. While following the banana diet, you may eat as many bananas as you want for breakfast. The only rules are that the bananas must be raw, uncooked and unfrozen and you should not eat to the point where you feel overly full. You are permitted to substitute other fruits for the bananas, but if you do so, you are restricted to only one piece of fruit.
Lunch and Dinner
While following the banana diet, you may eat whatever you want for lunch and dinner, but the rule is to eat only until you feel 80 percent full. While it is not a rule, the banana diet suggests avoiding or limiting fried foods. Eat dinner before 8:00 p.m., although prior to 6:00 p.m. is best. Chew your food thoroughly and pay attention to what you are eating.
Other Rules
The banana diet also suggests drinking only room temperature water for a beverage. This water should be sipped slowly and not consumed in excess. You may also consume a snack between lunch and dinner, but this snack should be low in fat.
The banana diet places no emphasis on exercise and says that you should exercise only if you want to. If you do decide to exercise, the diet encourages you to pick an exercise that puts very little stress on your body, such as walking. Getting adequate amounts of sleep is another important aspect of the diet. Try to go to bed before midnight and allow at least 4 hours to pass between dinner or your last snack and bedtime.
Theories
According to EveryDiet.org, there are several theories why the banana diet may be so successful. A popular theory is that bananas help boost metabolism and help the digestive process. Another theory is that the starch in bananas helps keep you full for extended periods of time so that you don't overeat. The starch in the bananas may also block the absorption of other types of carbohydrates.
