Cheerleading jumps add excitement to your cheers and routines. As a cheerleader, you should learn many different jumps, including a side hurdler. In a side hurdler, you extend one straight leg out to the side and bend the other leg. This jump is called a side hurdler because your leg points diagonally out to the side instead of to the front. When you do a side hurdler, you should resemble someone jumping over a hurdle.
Step 1
Start with your arms in a high-V motion above your head. Rise up on the balls of your feet to prep for your jump.
Step 2
Swing your arms down, crossing them in front of your body. Bend your knees deeply initiating the power for your jump.
Step 3
Explode off the ground after your arms have crossed the point of perpendicular to the ground. Lift your legs with the upswing of your arms.
Step 4
Hit the side hurdler position at the height of your jump. Snap your arms into a T motion, straight out from your shoulders.
Step 5
Land the jump with your feet together and knees slightly bent. Place your hands alongside your calves with your arms straight. Allow your torso to lean forward slightly, but keep your back very straight. Pause in this position for one to two counts.
Step 6
Pop your feet out to shoulder-width apart. Put your fists on your hips. Snap your head up, keeping your chin slightly elevated.
Tips and Warnings
- Do not reach for your legs in this jump. Keep your arms parallel to the ground. Keep your head and chest elevated in your jump position so you can make eye contact with the crowd. Don't forget to smile when you hit your side hurdler position in the air.
- Master more rudimentary jumps such as a tuck and spread eagle prior to attempting this jump.
