Occasionally feeling sleepy or drowsy throughout the day is normal and there are several causes of tiredness. Caffeine

Sugar
If you consume coffee for the caffeine kick, you may also add sugar to sweeten your drink. Sugar does not stimulate the central nervous system and adrenal glands like caffeine does. Sugar or glucose gives the body the energy it needs to complete tasks both mentally and physically. Getting too much sugar daily can lead to weight problems and complicate medical issues if you already have type 2 diabetes. When you consume sugar, your body must release insulin in order to reduce the glucose levels in your bloodstream. Once your body as used the sugar for energy, any excess can cause tiredness and a decrease in physical activity.
Tiredness
Tiredness is your body's way of telling you that it needs rest. Tiredness can be a trigger to eat more sugar, and consume caffeine but it can also occur after consumption. Having an overall lack of energy and motivation can prevent you from getting daily activities done and also lead to a more sedentary lifestyle. Limiting or eliminating your caffeine and sugar intake may help you avoid fluctuations with your mood and also prevent feelings of tiredness. If tiredness persists, consult with your medical provider to rule out conditions such as an under-active thyroid or diabetes.
Effects
Caffeine consumption, sugar intake and tiredness are all tied together. Learning how much caffeine triggers fluctuations in your mood and energy levels can help you adjust your intake accordingly. Stopping your intake abruptly may also have troubling side effects such as irritability, headaches, nausea and feelings of lethargy. Avoid using sugar substitutes and try to replace sugary drinks and treats with natural sweeteners such as fruits. Exercise each day, implementing moderate aerobic activity into your lifestyle to give you natural feelings of energy and alertness.
