Preparing for a colonoscopy often involves following a strict clear liquid diet. A colonoscopy involves inserting a small, flexible tube through the rectum and into the large bowel. Though the procedure only takes about an hour, prep for the colonoscopy begins several days before. The exam allows the inside of the intestines to be viewed for signs of colorectal cancer and aid in diagnosing other illnesses, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC). Follow specific instructions given by your medical doctor and prepare ahead of time to follow the special diet.
Purpose
A clear-liquid diet is necessary for the bowels to be free of obstruction. According to West Care Endoscopy Center, the diet also fuels the body with energy and essential electrolytes when normal food intake is temporarily interrupted. Not only is the diet important before a colonoscopy, it is generally followed after the procedure to ensure all medications and anesthesia have worn off. If the clear-liquid diet is not followed, you place yourself at risk of having to repeat the procedure or getting incorrect results.
Clear Liquids
A clear liquid is just that---generally any beverage you are able to see through, advises West Care Endoscopy Center. Often the diet begins two to three days before the procedure, according to NDDIC. Enjoy plain water, fat-free broth or soup, tea, gelatin, and clear sodas. Tea and coffee are permitted, but do not add any dairy products to the beverages. When drinking juice, avoid nectar, and strain all juice to remove pulp.
Items Permitted
A clear liquid diet allows you to eat a few food items. Gelatin, fruit ices, pulp-free ice pops and clear candy are often permitted, advises West Care Endoscopy. Still, it is important to clarify with your health care provider if you are allowed to consume these items.
Liquids to Avoid
Avoid consuming any beverages with red, purple or orange coloration. These liquids may be confused with internal bleeding. Cranberry juice, red wine, and sports drinks are some examples of beverages that may need to be eliminated from your diet. Milk and dairy beverages should not be consumed as well as any opaque drinks.
