Most forms of probiotic are bacterial microorganisms, but at least one is classified as yeast, which is a form of fungus. Saccharomyces boulardii, a probiotic yeast, is also known as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, or baker's yeast. According to MedlinePlus, it is most likely to be safe for most adults when taken orally, though in some cases may cause gas. In rare instances it may cause fungemia, a fungal infection of the bloodstream. As a result, those with immune system disorders should not use boulardii probiotics. This probiotic has properties that lend it to treating a number of specific disorders. Consult your doctor before taking boulardii probiotics.
Diarrhea
Saccharomyces boulardii has demonstrated effectiveness in treating acute infectious diarrhea and in preventing the type of diarrhea that often results from the use of antibiotics, according to a July 2009 article in "Pediatric Pharmacotherapy." The methods by which Saccharomyces boulardii accomplishes this are unclear, but it is believe that it improves the ability of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract to keep out harmful pathogens. It is also thought to increase immune function. By occupying space in the gastrointestinal tract, it inhibits the ability of harmful bacteria to colonize the region.
Helicobacter Pylori Infection
Peptic ulcers are most often caused by infection by a pathogen known as Helicobacter pylori. According to "Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics," Saccharomyces boulardii used along with a traditional treatment called "triple therapy" significantly increases the effectiveness of treatment by increasing the eradication of Helicobacter pylori as well as ameliorating some of the unpleasant side effects of triple therapy, such as diarrhea.
Crohn's Disease
Saccharomyces boulardii appears to have properties that aid in the treatment of Crohn's disease, a chronic disorder that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. Swelling in the lining of those organs can cause painful diarrhea. Cox College Health Information states that Saccharomyces boulardii was helpful in treating diarrhea caused by Crohn's disease.
Clostridium Difficile Disease
The pathogen Clostridium difficile can cause fever, nausea and diarrhea, most often in those whose immune system is already challenged by other types of infection, according to MedlinePlus. The "Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology" of December 2009 states that Saccharomyces boulardii appears to be effective in aiding in the treatment of Clostridium difficile disease, but that more information is needed before it can be confirmed as an adjunct to traditional treatment protocols.
