Nail fungus, fungal infections of your fingernails or toenails, is a common health problem. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, nail fungus is more common in your toenails because of the moist, warm environment -- an environment in which fungus thrive -- created by your socks and shoes. Herb pills, or supplements, may be a helpful adjunct therapy in treating your nail fungus, but only use herbs if you are under the guidance of a licensed health care professional.

Nail Fungus

Fungal nail infections are usually difficult to treat, due to their propensity to recur. MayoClinic.com states that, initially, your fungal infection may appear as a white or yellow spot under your nail and that, as it progresses, moving deeper and deeper into your nail, you may notice discoloration of your nail as well as nail thickening, nail crumbling and pain in the affected area. Significant risk factors for this condition include heavy perspiration, wearing shoes and socks and being diabetic.

Appropriate Herbal Supplements

Any herbal supplement that contains the substance berberine may be helpful in treating your fungal infections, including fungal infections of your nails. Berberine, notes Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," is a phytochemical known for its anti-fungal action, and it can be found in the following herbal remedies: goldenseal, bloodroot, barberry, Oregon grape root and yellowroot. Pau d'arco is another potent anti-fungal herb. Further scientific scrutiny may be required to determine the true effectiveness of these herbs.

Highlighted Herbal Supplement

Pau d'arco may be one of the most helpful herbs in treating your nail fungus. In her book "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," naturopathic physician Sharol Tilgner reports that pau d'arco possesses anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and lymphagogue action, or the ability to promote the activity of your lymph system. Pau d'arco is also known for its ability to fight bacterial and viral infections. Important phytochemicals contained in this herbal remedy include beta-carotene, lapachol and beta-sitosterol.

Additional Information

Because nail fungus can be difficult to treat, this problem may best be managed by a skilled healthcare professional. Herbal pills, or supplements, should only be used if you are under the care and guidance of your family doctor or another qualified practitioner. To better understand the role of herbs in your nail fungus treatment plan, ask your doctor about the most effective herbs for this purpose, proper dosage and treatment duration and how herbs might interact with other prescription drugs you might be taking.
