Non-functional kidneys, a condition more commonly known as kidney failure or kidney disease, is a serious health problem. The National Kidney Foundation states that non-functional kidneys may allow harmful metabolic waste products to accumulate in your blood, which can make you feel sick and lead to health complications such as anemia, elevated blood pressure and nerve damage. Herbal remedies have long been used in treating non-functional kidneys, but clear the use of herbs with your physician first.

Kidney Disease

In most cases, kidney disease, a common complication associated with diabetes, causes few observable symptoms in its early stages. You may experience the symptoms of kidney disease only after significant kidney damage has occurred. Some of the most common signs and symptoms associated with advanced kidney disease, says MayoClinic.com, include shortness of breath, elevated blood pressure, reduced appetite, nausea and vomiting and fatigue. Consuming a low-protein diet is an important treatment measure if you suffer from kidney disease.

Commonly Used Herbs

Certain herbs may be commonly used in treating your non-functional, or dysfunctional, kidneys. In her book "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," naturopathic physician Sharol Tilgner reports that the following herbs help protect your kidney function and structure: rhubarb, corn silk, ginkgo, astragalus, Asian ginseng and sage. A larger body of scientific research evidence may be required to evaluate the true health effects of these herbal remedies for this particular health problem.

A Powerful Herb

Astragalus, also known as Astragalus membranaceus, may be one of the most powerful herbs in treating your kidney dysfunction. According to expert herbalist Ed Smith, author of "Therapeutic Herb Manual," extracts of the dried root of the astragalus plant have long been used in treating debility and weakness throughout you body. Astragalus has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and adaptogenic health actions and may help encourage regeneration of damaged tissue and protect the function of your kidneys and liver.

Additional Information

Non-functional kidneys are a serious cause for concern. If you are diagnosed with kidney disease, ask your doctor about the safest and most effective treatment methods to help resolve this problematic condition. Herbal remedies, though commonly used in treating kidney-related problems, should always be used with caution since some herbs contain powerful natural ingredients that may cause profound effects within your body. Ask your doctor about proper dosage and treatment duration before using herbs to treat your non-functional kidneys.
