When it comes to weight loss, not many things work better than simple diet and exercise. To add to a great routine, people often look towards supplements. Although there is no "magic pill" that will take the weight off, there are certain herbs found in teas that can help reduce excess water weight, boost metabolism, and curb appetite. For some people, this can give them the extra boost they need to reach their weight loss goals. Always consult your doctor before taking any supplements, as some herbs can interfere with certain medications or medical conditions.

Green Tea

A popular tea in many cultures, green tea has been found to have metabolism-boosting thermogenic properties. This is due to two chemicals n the tea, catechins and caffeine. The catechin is more commonly known as the antioxidant EGCG, which increases the amount of calories the body burns. Green tea stimulates the body's nervous system, resulting in a thermogenic fat-burning effect. This effect may not be as strong in a decaffeinated green tea product. Although there are some positive studies, more research is necessary to come to any conclusions about this drink.

Hibiscus Tea

Hibiscus tea is often recognized for its role in lowering blood pressure or cholesterol, but few know this tea for its weight loss properties. A natural enzyme inhibitor, hibiscus tea contains compounds that block the body from digesting some carbohydrates. This herb may also have diuretic properties, helping relieve the body of excess water weight. This tea can be used to supplement any healthy weight loss routine. Do not consume hibiscus while pregnant or breastfeeding, as it may cause a miscarriage.

Pu'er Tea

Used for centuries overseas, pu'er is a fermented form of green or black tea leaves, and commonly consumed for its cholesterol-lowering and weight loss properties. This tea is also known for tasting better with age. With ongoing studies, the University of North Carolina's Department of Nutrition has found the tea to alter the gut microflora, possibly resulting in weight loss. The study also showed the results to last two weeks after the subjects stopped consuming the tea.

Helpful Reminders

When it comes to weight loss, it is important to remember that water weight is not the same as fat, and drinking plenty of water can help reduce water weight. What you put in the tea can also derail any benefits it is giving, so do not load each cup with spoonfuls of sugar, honey, cream, or chemical sweeteners. Try to enjoy your cup of tea as naturally as possible. Additionally, it is important to contact your doctor before using any herbs or beginning any weight loss routine.
