Yaz is a brand name for a medication containing the chemicals drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. Yaz is most often used in gynecological and obstetric treatments. However, Yaz is associated with several side effects, including changes in cholesterol. Always talk to your doctor before taking Yaz or any other similar medications.
Function of Yaz
Yaz is marketed as a contraceptive medication. By preventing ovulation and causing changes in your uterine and cervical lining, Yaz is able to significantly reduce the likelihood of pregnancy. Yaz makes it very difficult for sperm to reach a viable egg and will even prevent a fertilized egg from implanting on the uterus.
Yaz is also used in the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD. Yaz helps relieve symptoms of depression, anxiety, fatigue, sleep changes, breast tenderness, headache and weight gain. If you suffer from PMDD, ask your doctor if Yaz can help alleviate your symptoms.
Increased Cholesterol
Yaz contains two basic ingredients: ethinyl estradiol, an estrogen, and drospirenone, a progestin. Progestins are associated with increases in total cholesterol levels, Drugs.com warns. Specifically, the progestin in Yaz can cause an increase in low-density lipoprotein levels. LDL, also known as the "bad cholesterol," is the form of cholesterol most often linked with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. By increasing LDL levels, Yaz also increases total cholesterol levels. If you suffer from high cholesterol, Yaz may not be your best option for contraception.
Cardioprotective Effect
A study published in the June 2007 issue of "Gynecological Endocrinology" concluded that Yaz may help to protect the heart and blood vessels. The study authors report that high-density lipoprotein levels increased in women taking Yaz. HDL is a form of cholesterol that protects against heart disease and hypertension. The high estrogen content of the medication may be the reason behind this effect. High estrogen levels often cause an increase in HDL levels.
Other Side Effects
Yaz may also cause other side effects that need to be considered prior to taking the drug. Mild side effects include breast pain, darkening of the facial skin, loss off scalp hair, changes in weight, swelling of the hands and feet and changes in menstrual periods, Drugs.com reports. More serious side effects include sudden numbness or weakness, pain behind the eyes, visual disturbances, confusion and chest pain associated with nausea and excessive sweating. If you experience any of these more serious symptoms, stop taking the drug and immediately consult a healthcare professional.
