Turkey giblets include the heart, liver and gizzard. Commercially processed turkeys are inspected for quality and safety with the giblets typically packaged and placed inside the abdominal cavity. Most recipes call for removing the giblets before cooking, but sometimes you may be forced to cook the turkey with the giblets inside.

Step 1

Thaw the turkey in the refrigerator for one to three days. A general rule is to allow 24 hours of thawing time for every five pounds of turkey with the giblets inside.

Step 2

Preheat the oven to at least 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 3

Place the turkey and giblets in a baking dish and insert into the oven.

Step 4

Remove the turkey giblets from the abdominal cavity using a pair of tongs.

Step 5

Unwrap the turkey giblets and discard any plastic wrapping, paper or other packaging from the giblets. At this point, you can either cook the giblets and turkey separately or reinsert the giblets into the abdominal cavity to finish cooking.

Step 6

Cook the turkey and giblets until they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tips and Warnings

  • Whole turkeys typically have a giblet package stuffed inside. Remove the packaging before cooking so the packaging doesn't melt inside the turkey.
