Osteoporosis is the thinning and weakening of bones due to low levels of calcium and other minerals in your bones. When you have osteoporosis, your bones become so brittle that a fall or even bending over can cause a fracture. You are more likely to have osteoporosis if you are undergoing menopause. Pysllium use can increase the risk for osteoporosis.

Psyllium and Osteoporosis

Psyllium, sold under the brand name Metamucil, is a bulk-forming laxative used to treat constipation. Use psyllium cautiously if you have osteoporosis because it interferes with the absorption of calcium from food, according to the information website Wellness.com. Calcium is an essential mineral needed for the formation of strong bones and teeth. Avoid taking psyllium together with calcium-rich foods or calcium supplements.

Psyllium Administration

Psyllium is available in the form of powder, granules, capsules, liquid and wafers that are taken by mouth one to three times a day, according to PubMedHealth. Take psyllium supplements one hour before meals or two hours after meals. Mix psyllium powder and granules with 8 oz. of water or fruit juice and swallow immediately. Drink another glass of water after taking psyllium. Psyllium can swell and block your esophagus if you don't take it with enough fluids.

Psyllium Side Effects

When taking pysllium supplements, you may experience side effects such as abdominal bloating, gas, nausea and vomiting, according to PubMedHealth. If you are allergic to psyllium, you may develop symptoms such as difficulties breathing, chest tightness, rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue and eyelids. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop allergic symptoms after taking psyllium.

Osteoporosis Symptoms

During the early stages of osteoporosis, you may not have any symptoms. When symptoms develop, you may experience bone pain, low back pain, neck pain, stooped posture, increased fracture of the wrist, hip or spine, and loss of height over time. If you notice these symptoms while you are taking psyllium, contact your doctor for further evaluation.
