When you suffer a broken collarbone, the bone --- also known as the clavicle --- that runs from the sternum to the front of the shoulder cracks in some way. Most people sustain this injury as a result of falling, particularly when the arm is outstretched to break the fall. In fact, a broken clavicle is one of the most common fractures seen in competitive sports.
Healing
According to the Sports Injury Clinic, a broken collarbone usually takes four to six weeks to heal. Some people, however, may need upward of three months to make a full recovery. During this time, you should avoid any high-impact activities. This restriction isn't just limited to contact sports. Running is often off limits while your collarbone heals, so you won't be able to play tennis, soccer or other pursuits that require you to run. Your doctor may, however, give you the go-ahead to bike. But biking should be kept to a stationary bike to prevent reinjury of the collarbone.
Treatment
The type of fracture dictates treatment, but usually involves immobilization of the arm and shoulder. Most people need to wear a sling during the recovery phase of this injury. Some, on the other hand, may need to wear what's known as a figure-eight strap, which fits around both shoulders to better immobilize the broken clavicle.
Exercises
Part of the rehabilitation process is often physical therapy. Your physical therapist can best provide you with the exercises needed to return the full range of motion to the affected shoulder. Some of the more common activities, however, include shoulder shrugs, shoulder rotations, shoulder flexions, pendulum swings, chest raises, bicep curls and triceps curls, explains the Sports Science Orthopaedic Clinic. Physical therapy may begin as the bone is still healing to avoid stiffness, but your doctor or physical therapist can determine when therapy should begin.
Prevention
Although there's no surefire way of preventing a broken collarbone, especially with contact sports, there are steps you can take to reduce its potential. Learning how to fall is one option. Also, wearing the right shoes for the athletic pursuit can reduce the risk of falling. Additionally, equip yourself with the proper gear before heading out to play your chosen activity.
