Rectal bleeding refers to any blood that passes through your anus -- including bleeding from your lower colon and the last few inches of your large intestine -- according to MayoClinic.com. Rectal bleeding can have a variety of causes. However, eating strawberries should not cause rectal bleeding. According to the American College of Gastroenterology, strawberries are a source of fiber. Fiber can actually help to reduce rectal bleeding caused by hemorrhoids.
Causes of Rectal Bleeding
Rectal bleeding can have a variety of causes ranging from mild to severe. If you experience rectal bleeding, visit with your doctor for a diagnosis. Causes of rectal bleeding can include constipation, hemorrhoids, colon cancer, food poisoning, Crohn's disease, colitis and anal cancer. Bleeding can also be caused by a tear in the skin of your anus -- known as an anal fissure -- or a condition known as diverticulosis -- which causes a bulging pouch to form on the wall of your intestines.
Hemorrhoids
The American College of Gastroenterology indicates that hemorrhoids can be treated through fiber intake, including strawberries. Hemorrhoids can be swollen or stretched veins found underneath the skin of the anus or can form inside of the rectum. Hemorrhoids are common in the adult population. The American College of Gastroenterology indicates half of Americans will experience hemorrhoids by age 50. Hemorrhoids can develop as the result of straining to have a bowel movement. Treatment for hemorrhoids includes avoiding spicy foods and irritating soups, creams and suppositories, cleaning your anus after a bowel movement and eliminating constipation.
Fiber
According to the American Dietetic Association, fiber is well-known for keeping food moving throughout your body. Fiber can help prevent digestive problems, including constipation and hemorrhoids. Sources of fiber include strawberries, apples, bananas, oranges, pears, grape fruits, prunes, raspberries, grapes and cantaloupe. Grain products such as bread, cereal, pasta and rice are also sources of fiber. Vegetables and beans can also help reduce constipation and hemorrhoids including carrots, corn, potatoes, lettuce, broccoli and kidney beans.
Recommended Fiber Intake
Fiber is important in preventing rectal bleeding. The American Dietetic Association recommends males consume 38 g of fiber daily. Females should consume 25 g of fiber daily. Males over the age of 50 should consume 30 g. Females over 50 need 21 grams of fiber on a daily basis. This is equivalent to 2 cups of fruit or 2 1/2 cups of vegetables each day, for example. If you are concerned you are not receiving enough fiber, talk to your doctor about the possibility of a fiber supplement.
