Dribbling a basketball is one of the most fundamental aspects of basketball, but many players do not devote as much practice to dribbling as needed. When you are dribbling a basketball, you want to have the ball bounce to a height between your knees and your waist. This way, it will be more difficult for defenders to steal the ball from you, but you still will be able to move and change directions quickly.
Step 1
Begin dribbling by bouncing the ball with one hand at waist level. Use your wrist and fingertips to push the ball down toward the ground, then slow the ball to a stop with your hand spread open, again using your fingertips as the ball comes back up. After the ball comes back up, push it down to the floor again. The motion should be smooth and rhythmic, rather than a slapping motion with your hand. As you push the ball down, corral the ball again just above your knees so it doesn't bounce above your waist.
Step 2
Bend slightly at the knees and lower your back side so it feels like you are sitting in a chair. Bending the knees will not only let you move quicker, but it also brings your knees lower to the ground. Dribbling the ball lower to the ground helps you protect the ball better. As you dribble, focus on keeping your dribbling hand between your knees and waist.
Step 3
Bring your non-dribbling arm up and look at eye level instead of at the ball. Your non-dribbling arm not only will stabilize you while standing, but it also can be used to keep your defenders away. Looking up will allow you to see the rest of the court, allowing you to find an open teammate or a shooting opportunity. Keep your dribble at your back leg, away from your defender. After practice, this position should become natural for you on the court.
