A punching bag can be a worthwhile investment. It's a beneficial piece of exercise equipment and a stress reliever as well. The only problem can involve finding a proper place to hang it. Hanging it from a tree or a carport is usually simple enough, but there are reasons you might want to avoid that. There are several ways you can hang a punching bag indoors.
From Your Ceiling
Hanging your punching bag from the ceiling is the most common way to hang it indoors. Most punching bags come with a chain assembly and the necessary hardware. You'll also need a power drill, stepladder, screwdriver and a socket wrench. The ceiling joist you hang it from needs to be at least 6 square inches top and bottom. You should also hang it in a position that will give you at least a 5-foot radius from the bag on all sides so the bag can swing freely.
From a Heavy Bag Stand
Hanging your punching bag from a heavy bag stand is another option. You won't have to hammer or drill into anything and risk damaging your home. Heavy bag stands are ideal for renters and people who move often. They typically range in price from about $100 to $200, as of June 2011. You'll probably need to buy extra weight plates to support the base.
From a Wall
You can buy a wall mount from which to hang your heavy bag. This isn't the best solution because it doesn't leave you with much space for your bag to swing, and you can easily scuff up your wall, though it does work. You can buy a wall mount online for about $70, as of June 2011
From a Pullup Bar
You can hang a light punching bag, like a speed bag or 40-pound punching bag, from a pullup bar. Do not attempt to hang a full-size heavy bag -- 60 pounds or more -- from a pullup bar. A bag that heavy will eventually damage your door frame or break the bar.
