If your goal is to get in better shape while simultaneously getting rid of stress, martial arts may be the right exercise program for you. Tae kwon do stands alone in the martial arts world because of its focus on kicks to the head and lower-body flexibility. It focuses on cardiovascular fitness, while at the same time, is a beneficial workout for your muscles, especially those in your lower body. If you're considering taking a tae kwon do class, check with your doctor to determine whether you're healthy enough for the activity.

Calories Burned

The Mayo Clinic says a 160-pound person will burn about 730 calories during a one-hour tae kwon do workout. Heavier students will burn even more calories due to the extra weight they must move during the workout. A 200-pound person can burn 910 calories in an hour.

The Class

If you're wondering how you will burn all the calories in an hour, consider the workout. Tae kwon do classes generally begin with a fairly intense warm-up session that focuses on getting your heart beating and blood pumping to your muscles. This is followed by practice in forms, which require low stances that stress your lower body. Finally, you will practice your free-sparring techniques, a heavy aerobic activity that will push your heart and lungs to their limits.

Frequency of Exercise

Taking tae kwon do for weight loss is a viable option if activities like jogging or aerobics aren't for you. But to lose weight, you should plan on attending at least three classes per week. The Mayo Clinic recommends that adults exercise at least 2 1/2 hours a week, a goal that will be met taking three classes a week. Classes that focus on sparring or other techniques that keep you moving can also serve as an aerobic workout.

Other Benefits

Besides weight loss, you will notice other changes in your body after a few months of tae kwon do training. Your lower body will be much stronger and more flexible, which can help prevent injuries. You may also notice that your pants are fitting a little better around your butt. Because of all the high kicks and the time you spend with your legs in the air in tae kwon do, you will probably find that your butt and legs become more toned and shapely.
