If you want fresh prawns, you won't get any fresher than live prawns. The crustacean is popular in many seafood dishes include pasta and soups. You can also eat them boiled or barbecued, with a lemon garnish or cocktail sauce. If you have live prawns, you must kill them before eating. This is done by suffocating them in tap water or through cooking them in boiling water. They'll be cooked in a couple of minutes.

Step 1

Fill a pot halfway with water. The more prawns you have, the larger the pot should be.

Step 2

Place the pot on the stove and bring the water to a rolling boil.

Step 3

Place the prawns in head-first to kill them more quickly.

Step 4

Allow the water to return to a rolling boil. Cook for three to five minutes. The prawns will be opaque with a pink tint, the Wild Prawns website notes. A small gap forms between the cooked meat and the prawn skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Eat prawns right out of the pot, dipping them in cocktail sauce, tartar sauce or sprinkling with lemon juice. Throw cooked prawns on the grill, seasoned with one part pepper, one part paprika and one part cayenne pepper.
