Broccoli and cauliflower are extremely nutritious vegetables packed with antioxidants. Both broccoli and cauliflower belong to the cabbage family and contain a high level of vitamins. According to the Health Food Guide, both of these vegetables have been linked to the prevention and control of diseases such as Alzheimer's and diabetes.

Broccoli and cauliflower are two of the healthiest foods you can eat and are a rich source of iron. According to the McKinley Health Centre, broccoli and cauliflower are classed as non-heme iron sources, which means that the iron the vegetables contain is more easily absorbed by the body when combined with high-iron food sources, such as meat, fish and poultry.

According to the American Cancer Society, broccoli contains chemicals which may reduce your chance of developing certain cancers. The Linus Pauling Institute states that cauliflower contains the phytonutrients sulforaphane and isothiocyanates, which help to reduce tumor growth and remove toxins from the body. Both broccoli and cauliflower may reduce your risk of developing colon cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer and ovarian cancer.

Health Benefits of Broccoli

Broccoli contains many vitamins beneficial to your health. According to the Health Food Guide, the Vitamin C found in the vegetable helps to minimize cold symptoms and prevents cataracts from developing. The high level of folic acid helps with normal tissue growth in women and is beneficial during pregnancy. The high level of calcium found in the vegetable is also good for strengthening bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Medline Plus states that the potassium found in broccoli assists the metabolism and helps to build muscle and strengthen the heart.

Like broccoli, cauliflower contains vitamins beneficial for health. The Vitamin C found in the vegetable acts an antioxidant and helps to strengthen the immune system. The folate in cauliflower can help prevent anemia from developing. Cauliflower is also a good source of fiber, manganese and beta-carotene. Cauliflower contains a high level of estrogen, which inhibits breast and prostate tumor growth. Cauliflower has more nutritional benefits raw than when it's cooked, and the florets are the most nutritious part of the vegetable.
