Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in your lungs and digestive system. Mucus buildup in the lungs and respiratory tract causes breathing problems. When thick mucus builds up in your pancreas, it prevents the release of pancreatic enzymes needed to digest food. Bovine colostrum may be used to improve immune system functioning, according to the Center for Nutritional Research.

Cystic Fibrosis and Bovine Colostrum

Bovine colostrum, also called cow's milk colostrum, is the yellowish milk secreted during the first two to four days after a cow gives birth. Bovine colostrum contains immune factors that help boost your immune system. When you have cystic fibrosis, you are at high risk for frequent respiratory infections due to mucus buildup in your lungs. Bovine colostrum helps stimulate your body's immune system so that it can fight frequent respiratory infections.

Bovine Colostrum Administration

Bovine colostrum is available as a liquid or dry powder to be taken by mouth. Consult your doctor before taking OTC bovine supplements. The doctor will determine the dosage you need. You may experience gas, bloating and nausea after taking bovine colostrum, according to Drugs.com. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop an allergic reaction after taking bovine colostrum.

Cystic Fibrosis Treatment

Cystic fibrosis is a chronic illness that is managed using medication, diet modifications and lifestyle changes. An early diagnosis of cystic fibrosis and comprehensive treatment plan from an early age helps improve survival and quality of life. Prophylactic antibiotics are used to treat and prevent frequent respiratory infections caused by mucus buildup in the lungs. Adequate fluid intake helps loosen mucus in the lungs. Bronchodilators and oxygen therapy are used to help make breathing easier. Annual flu vaccines are recommended to prevent frequent upper respiratory infections. Synthetic pancreatic enzymes are prescribed to help absorb fats and protein. The enzymes should be taken with every meal. A special high calorie and high protein diet is also used to prevent weight loss. Vitamin supplements may also be used to supplement nutritional deficiencies that are caused by lack of digestive enzymes.

Symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis

Symptoms that are associated with cystic fibrosis include increased congestion in the lungs or sinuses, sinus pain or pressure, frequent coughing, increased shortness of breath, productive sputum, fever, loss of appetite, bloating, abdominal pain, severe constipation, pale or clay colored stool, oily stool that has mucus or that floats, and weight loss. Untreated cystic fibrosis can lead to pneumonia, malnutrition and chronic respiratory failure.
