Poppy seeds are used to flavor various baked goods such as breads and muffins. They are also used in pasta dishes and in curries. The flavor is nutty and sweet with a hint of spiciness. To maximize the flavor imparted by the poppy seeds, roast them after harvesting. Once roasted, use the seeds either whole or ground with a mortar and pestle.
Step 1
Harvest the poppy seeds from the pods directly from the plant. Seeds are blue, gray or white depending on the plant variety. Dried seeds fall out of the pod when turned upside down.
Step 2
Heat a skillet either on the stove top or in the oven on "Medium" heat. In an oven, this is 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 3
Pour the seeds in the skillet in a thin layer evenly distributed across the skillet.
Step 4
Stir the seeds a couple of times, toasting them for five minutes. The seeds turn dark brown when done.
Step 5
Place the seeds in an airtight container to store and use later. You can also grind the seeds in a mortar and pestle for a different texture in recipes.
