Clear liquid diets are often recommended post surgery or after anesthesia. You may also have to follow a clear liquid diet prior to having some medical procedures that involve the abdomen or bowels. You should only remain on this type of diet for a short period of time, as your body is unable to sustain itself with only liquids. In some circumstances, not following the diet may result in having to repeat medical procedures or severe side effects. Consult your doctor if you have any questions regarding your clear liquid diet.

Goals

The goal of the clear liquid diet is to provide enough calories and nutrients until you can resume a regular diet. Clear liquids do not strain the gastrointestinal tract after surgery. Before surgery or medical procedures, a clear liquid diet is a way for the body to continue nourishment without consuming foods that block the intestines or add residue in the gastrointestinal tract.

Sample Beverages

A clear liquid diet contains liquids that you can see through. These beverages include broth, water, juice and tea. If you drink tea, do not add milk to your beverage. Juices should not contain pulp. You can also enjoy clear sodas and soft drinks.

Sample Foods

A small variety of solids are allowed on the clear liquid diet. You can suck on crushed ice cubes or frozen juice for added flavor. You can also have gelatin and ice pops without pulp. Hard candy and lozenges are permitted. Add flavor and seasoning to items with salt, honey, sugar or jelly.

Foods to Avoid

Do not drink any dairy products including milk, chocolate milk, shakes or smoothies. Avoid fruit nectars that are not transparent. Vegetable and tomato juice are not transparent and are not part of a clear liquid diet. Although some medical doctors may allow beer or wine on a clear liquid diet, most will not. Ask your health professional any specific questions regarding your diet and what foods you should not include.
