A B-12 dot is a specially designed microtablet containing 500 mcg of vitamin B-12 that dissolves in your mouth. Cyanocobalamin is the generic name for B-12 dots. This man-made B-12 vitamin is part of the B-complex family responsible for a variety of essential functions in the body. According to "User's Guide to the B-Complex Vitamins," vitamin B-12 deficiency, while rare, can result from medical conditions. Speak with a medical professional prior to consuming any health supplement, including vitamin B-12 dots.
Vitamin B-12
Most of the B-complex vitamins are water-soluble and, therefore, not stored by your body. Your body will eliminate through waste B-vitamin excess. Vitamin B-12 is the exception, and your liver can store excess B-12. Vitamin B-12 helps your body produce DNA and RNA and regulate the formation of red blood cells. It also increases the efficiency of iron.
Vitamin B-12 Deficiency
Certain groups have a higher risk for vitamin B-12 deficiency, including the elderly, strict vegetarians, individuals with liver or kidney disease and breastfed infants. Low levels of B-12 can lead to low blood pressure, vision problems, dementia, muscle weakness and ataxia. Further, a B-12 deficiency can lead to pernicious anemia and fatigue.
Taking B-12 Dots
The dots don't require water and will dissolve under your tongue. To maximize your body's absorption of the vitamin, take the B-12 dots immediately after a meal. If you have a vitamin B-12 deficiency, consult a medical professional to determine the appropriate dose to treat your deficiency. According to "The Wonders of Vitamin B12," the recommended daily dose of vitamin B-12 for adults is 2.4 mcg.
Precautions
B-12 dots do not have any common side effects associated with their use. However, in rare cases, some individuals may experience a severe allergic reaction that manifests as a rash, hives, swelling of the extremities and difficulty breathing. Vitamin B-12 dots are nontoxic and safe for most individuals to consume, but speak with a medical professional prior to taking them.
