Cod liver oil is a supplement that has been used historically to treat vitamin deficiencies in children. However, it has also gained use in adults for the treatment of health problems. Cod liver oil is generally safe, but it can be dangerous in high doses, so talk to your doctor before using it.

What Is Cod Liver Oil?

Cod belong to a class of fish known as fatty fish, because they contain oils that are rich in a kind of unsaturated fat known as omega-3 fatty acids. Extracts from the liver of cod not only contain these fatty acids, but they are rich in vitamins A and D. Some people take cod liver oil to reduce their risk of Alzheimer's disease and cancer, though there is no evidence that this supplement is effective for these conditions.

Cardiovascular Disease

One of the main benefits of cod liver oil is that it reduces your risk of developing cardiovascular problems, such as a heart attack or stroke. The omega-3 fatty acids in cod liver oil are able to reduce the levels of triglycerides, a type of fat associated with atherosclerosis, in your blood. These fats also inhibit platelet clumping and help protect you from blood clots that can cause a heart attack or stroke.

Vitamin Deficiencies

Cod liver oil is also rich in vitamins A and D. Vitamin A is needed to make pigments that allow your retina to absorb light, and a vitamin A deficiency can cause vision problems. Vitamin D, on the other hand, is important for the health of your bones. Vitamin D regulates the cells in your bones and also helps your intestines absorb calcium from your diet.

Risks

Although cod liver oil is used by many people and can be purchased without a prescription, it should be used with caution. The omega-3 fatty acids can interfere with normal blood clotting and cause you to bruise or bleed excessively. In addition, the high levels of vitamin A and D can be toxic, especially if you take cod liver oil in high doses. Talk to your doctor before using cod liver oil or other supplements.
