Hiking and backpacking are outdoor recreational activities that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. As a result, you can expose youth to the great outdoors during a backpacking trip. Regardless of the terrain or type of trip, there is a list of essential gear and equipment that must be included. Proper equipment keeps you safe, but additional equipment for youth provides a learning experience.

Core Items

Regardless of weather conditions, terrain or duration of trip, the core items for a youth backpacking trip include the tent, sleeping bag and backpack. Youth backpacks must have an adjustable hip belt, shoulder harness and stabilizer strap for a comfortable, secure fit. Sleeping bags also must be designed to match the small frame and body size of youth hikers to minimize excess bulk and pack weight while standing up to the changing weather conditions. The tent must be designed to withstand the wind or rain for the specific terrain while being lightweight for a youth to carry.

Survival Kit

Survival items are essential for any backpacking trip, but you might need additional items for youth backpacking. A survival kit starts with a basic first-aid kit that includes bandages, antibiotic ointment and moleskin, along with any personal medications for the youth. Always include multiple fire starters, including lighters and waterproof matches, along with an emergency blanket and shelter. Additional survival items include orange flagging tape and a signal mirror to mark your location, and flashlights with extra batteries.

Navigation

Navigation equipment is an excellent way to incorporate outdoor recreation with a learning experience for youth backpackers. General equipment includes a topographic map and compass. Coordinate games using the map and compass that focuses on certain checkpoints or landmarks. The goal of the navigation equipment during a youth backpacking trip is to gain general navigational awareness with map reading and orienteering.

Nutrition

The nutrition -- food and water -- during a youth backpacking trip must provide enough calories, nutrients and hydration to match the duration of the trip. Sample food items for youth backpacking trips include dried fruits, nuts, trail mix and jerky, along with freeze-dried meals for lunch and dinner. These food items provide a significant amount of calories and nutrients with minimal pack weight. Always carry a water bottle or portable hydration system along with a water purification system. This allows you to stay properly hydrated during the backpacking trip without the risk for bacteria and viruses in the water.
