There are four blood types -- O, A, AB and B. According to Vanderbilt University and Dr. Peter D'Adamo, author of "Eat Right for Your Blood Type," each blood type originated in a different location around the world, and functions properly when given a diet that is specific to that region.

Foods to Eat

If you have type O blood, you should be eating a diet that is high in lean meats, fresh produce, nuts and seeds, and fish. The diet for type O blood should replicate a diet that early and ancient humans used to eat, otherwise considered a hunter-gatherer diet. Lean meat options include pork, chicken, turkey, lean cuts of beef, elk, deer and fresh fish. Type O blood types can eat all types of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Foods to Avoid

People with type O blood should avoid foods that would have been eaten by later, agricultural or farming societies. These foods include dairy product and grains, like rice, oats, wheat and rye. These foods would not have been consumed by hunter-gatherer societies, and are not considered part of a type O blood type diet.

Considerations

If you have type O blood, it is important to inspect all of the labels on packaged or processed foods to ensure that they do not contain dairy products or grains. Avoid foods that have hidden grains and dairy products, including cake, cookies, energy bars, smoothies that are pre-bottled and breakfast cereals.

Warnings

Always check with your family naturopath or medical doctor before suddenly altering or changing your diet. You may have special health circumstances, such as diabetes, that should be monitored while you change your diet. Your doctor can run tests to ensure that it is safe for you to change your diet to one that is appropriate for type O blood types. Since studies have not been conducted regarding the efficacy of the blood type diet, you may or may not achieve any health benefits using this diet plan.
