T4 Side Effects

T4 is the main hormone produced by the thyroid gland and is responsible for metabolic function and the body's energy production. A doctor will prescribe synthetic thyroid hormone for someone who has hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or who has no thyroid gland. T4 is known by its brand name, Synthroid, or by its generic name, levothyroxine sodium. This drug is generally safe, according to Drugs.com, but does have side effects if taken in too large a dose.

Common Side Effects of T4

According to Drugs.com, too much T4 can produce the symptoms of hyperthyroidism such as increased appetite, weight loss, diarrhea, increase in bowel frequency, heat intolerance, menstrual irregularities, hair loss, anxiety, palpitations and Graves disease. Due to the long half life of the drug, side effects may not appear for weeks after initiating therapy or until the dosage is raised.

Serious Side Effects of T4

RxList.com mentions serious side effects of T4, describing a constellation of cardiac symptoms such as tachycardia, angina, palpitations, hypertension and ischemic heart disease. Significant effects on cardiac function and left ventricle function have also been reported.

When T4 is Not Indicated

The Merck Manual explains that this drug should be avoided if you have had a recent heart attack. If you suffer from diabetes or adrenal gland disorders where you do not make enough corticosteroid hormone, or if you are hypersensitive to thyroid hormone, do not take T4 except under the supervision of your doctor.
