Nothing says summertime like a hot dog, or weenie, roast over a campfire. Hot dogs come prepackaged and precooked, which makes them easy to store and carry along. Be sure to keep your hot dogs cold until you're ready to roast them; use a cooler with ice packs if you're away from a refrigerator. Have either commercially available campfire skewers or sticks sharpened on one end on hand for roasting weenies over the fire.
Step 1
Find a safe spot to start your fire. Choose a spot that doesn't have low, overhanging tree branches that could catch fire. Use your hands or a small shovel to clear an area of debris about five feet in diameter. The Department of Natural Resources recommends clearing down to packed ground if possible.
Step 2
Dig a small pit into the ground if one is not already available. Circle the pit with rocks or bricks to create a barrier for keeping burning material inside the fire pit. Use a metal fire ring if one is available.
Step 3
Place dry kindling and balled-up paper into the fire pit. Place dry wood on top of the kindling and light the fire with matches. Add more kindling or pieces of wood as needed to keep the fire going. Keep a bucket of water nearby for taming flames that may get too big.
Step 4
Open your package of hot dogs. Choose one hot dog and place one end of it onto the pointed end of your skewer or stick. Skewer the hot dog to about halfway the length to ensure it is securely on the stick. Grip the skewer or stick a few inches from the bottom to ensure your hand is away from the fire. Place the skewered hot dog a few inches above the flame. Rotate the skewer or stick often to brown the entire hot dog.
Step 5
Remove the hot dog from the stick or skewer after about four to five minutes, or until the skin of the hotdog is brown and bubbly. Use a utensil such as a knife or fork to slide the hot dog off the skewer to avoid burning your fingers. Enjoy your hot dog on a bun with the condiments of your choice.
