Many dieters want to incorporate high fat burning foods into their diet to achieve the quickest weight loss possible. Although their intentions are noble, there is no such thing as "fat burning foods," as the Students' Center of Health at West Virginia University and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System explain. Weight loss and fat burn is caused by eating fewer calories than you burn. Although so-called "negative calorie fat burning foods" such as grapefruit, celery, cabbage and apples will not burn fat off your body, these foods are still ideal for your weight loss diet.

Grapefruit

As the American Council on Exercise explains, grapefruit will not burn fat from your body, but it is still a healthful low-calorie addition to your weight loss diet that will help you lose fat. A medium grapefruit is only about 40 calories and a larger grapefruit is only about 60 calories. Dr. Jonny Bowden, Ph.D. and clinical nutrition specialist, explains that grapefruit contains compounds that can further aid your weight loss and fat burning goals. According to a spring 2006 study in the "Journal of Medicinal Foods," researchers at Scripps Clinic in San Diego found that grapefruit helps improve your resistance to insulin and suggests that you incorporate grapefruit into your weight loss diet.

Celery

Celery, like grapefruit, will not directly burn body fat but is an ideal addition to your weight loss diet. Celery is particularly low in calories. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a cup of celery is 13 calories. A single 4-inch celery stick is only 1 calorie. Dr. Bowden considers celery to be a "high-volume food." A high-volume food contains relatively high amounts of air, fiber and water to a relatively low amount of calories. Celery is particularly high in water. Foods that are high in water can satisfy your appetite and keep you full without requiring you to eat a large amount of calories.

Cabbage

A popular weight loss fad diet called the Cabbage Soup Diet has gotten many dieters to associate cabbage with weight loss. Although cabbage will not make you lose fat or weight, it is an appropriate addition to your weight loss diet because it is also low in calories. A cup of chopped cabbage is 22 calories and a single leaf of cabbage is just 4 calories. Dr. Bowden also reports that a cup of cooked cabbage has 4 g of fiber, which helps satisfy your appetite. The American Council and Dr. Bowden also recommend bok choy, which is Chinese cabbage that is even lower in calories.

Apples

Although they are associated with negative calorie fat burning foods, according to the American Council on Exercise, apples are not as low in calories as the previously mentioned foods. A medium-sized apple is about 70 calories. Despite being slightly higher in calories, apples can be a good addition to your weight loss diet. Dr. Bowden explains that apples are an especially good diet food because they contain pectin fiber. Pectin fiber is a specific type of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber slows down the rate at which sugar or glucose is absorbed by your body. This helps keep your blood sugar levels stable and discourages your body from releasing insulin, which can cause unwanted fat storage. A medium-sized apple contains 5 g of pectin fiber.
