The idea of hitting a slide is to trick the opposing team into thinking you are going to hit a regular middle hit, then quickly switch it up and do something they are not expecting. A slide attack is a difficult hit to defend in volleyball because the attacker can hit the ball at varying heights and speeds and you don't know where the ball is going to be set, making it hard for blockers and defenders to get in position. You must develop good communication with your setter and practice proper technique to master the slide attack.
Step 1
Move toward the ball using one of two methods: approach the setter at a 45 degree angle, or run parallel to the net. The setter must set the ball accurately and quickly if running parallel because of the close proximity to the net.
Step 2
Watch the set. Take your first step towards the setter before she has set the ball. Chase the ball, running behind the setter.
Step 3
Turn your body quickly, aligning your hitting shoulder with the ball.
Step 4
Jump off of your non-dominant foot. If you are right-handed, jump off your left foot; if your are left-handed jump off your right foot. If you are jumping off your left foot, drive your right knee up as high as you can to get more height, and vice versa.
Step 5
Glide through the air as your hand makes contact with the ball.
