Winning a college baseball scholarship has everything to do with your production on the baseball field. You must prove yourself at every level as a player. But it doesn't stop there. Gaining the scholarship might take a significant marketing effort on your part. You have to target the schools and coaches that will be most interested and explain to them why you are the right player for their program.
Develop Your Skills
Become a complete player. Earning a college scholarship means that you have developed your talents completely. Hitting might be the most glamorous and noticeable part of the game, but you need to have a great understanding of the game and know how to attack your opponent. You must understand strategy. You have to field the ball well, run the bases and make adjustments every time you come to the plate based on the game situation and the pitcher you are facing. It's not just about hitting the long ball. Play an all-around game.
Develop a Plan
Talk to your high school coach and tell him your goals. Let him know that you want to earn a baseball scholarship and ask him for pointers. A good high school coach will make calls on your behalf and will give you a road map of schools that he knows of that are looking for players like you. If you have an experienced high school coach, he probably knows quite a few college coaches who he can speak to directly. This will be a big help when looking for a scholarship.
Video
Put together a video that demonstrates your baseball skills. This will get a prospective coach's attention. Put together highlights that demonstrate your hitting, fielding and baserunning ability. If you are a pitcher, show the highlights from your best pitching games. After putting together a reel of your skills, make sure you give coaches an insight into your personality and outside interests. You want to demonstrate you are a well-rounded individual who will be a solid addition to the campus.
Letters of Recommendation
You will want to get a letter of recommendation from your coach and athletic director. However, your cause might be helped even more by a letter of recommendation from an opposing coach. When an opposing coach speaks on your behalf, it tells a prospective college program that you have impressed those who have played against you.
