A healthy, balanced diet is a key to having a healthy gallbladder. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, foods with high fat and sugar content contribute to gallstones and other gallbladder diseases. Eating a well-rounded diet and maintaining a healthy weight will go a long way toward keeping your gallbladder free of complications.

High-fiber Foods

High-fiber foods, such as whole grains, can help prevent gallbladder diseases like cholecystitis and gallstones because fiber prevents cholesterol from accumulating in your gallbladder and forming stones. Nutritious sources of fiber you can include in your diet include whole-wheat bread, oatmeal and brown rice.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are good for your gallbladder in several ways. Not only are they also high in fiber, but they also provide valuable nutrients without added fats and sugars, lowering your risk of gallstones. Low-fat diets are key because the gallbladder is stimulated by fat to release bile. Bile release can contribute to the development of gallstones and other gallbladder diseases.

Milk and Milk Products

A low-fat diet is key in maintaining a healthy gallbladder, so drink skim milk instead of whole. Use low-fat options, like nonfat sour cream, part skim mozzarella cheese, nonfat yogurt and low-fat cheese.

Nuts and Legumes

Nuts, like peanuts, walnuts and almonds, and legumes, like navy and black beans, may also help reduce your risk of gallstones. They serve as substitutes for the fatty meats that can increase your risk of gallstones while still providing the protein you need. Furthermore, iron deficiencies may cause increased occurrences of cholesterol crystals in the gallbladder. Several of best sources of low-fat foods with high iron contents are legumes, particularly lentils and soybeans.

Coffee and Alcohol

Moderate coffee and alcohol consumption daily may reduce your risk of gallstones. Even just 1 oz. of alcohol daily can be effective in preventing gallbladder problems. In addition, the caffeine in coffee seems to stimulate the gallbladder, an effect that does not occur from the caffeine in soft drinks.

Meats

Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology suggests lean cuts of beef, like sirloin, tenderloin and flank cuts for good health. Lean meats, like poultry and fish, are important to eat when maintaining a healthy gallbladder, since high-fat meats raise your risk of gallstones and gallbladder diseases.
