A healthy body is a result of a well-rounded diet that is rich in the necessary nutrients. An essential nutrient that is not produced naturally by the body is omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 can only be obtained from the diet, whether it be in supplement form or by eating foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Although taking fish oil supplements does not have any known side effects, Mayo Clinic advises taking supplements with meals. Some supplements are more easily broken down when paired with a meal. It is also recommended to start with a low dosage to avoid symptoms such as diarrhea, bloating, belching, heartburn, and abdominal pain. More extreme symptoms include nausea and vomiting. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends no more than 3 g per day for healthy adults taking supplements. Always consult your health care provider before adding any new supplements to your diet.
Mercury Poisoning
Although doctors advise patients to get their omega-3 fatty acids from natural sources, there are some risks that come with the consumption of some omega-3 rich fish oil. According to Mayo Clinic, some species of fish are prone to carrying a higher amount of environmental contaminants such as mercury. Some fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids are high risk factors for mercury poisoning. According to the American Heart Association, some of the highest on the list are snapper are mackeral, which also contain a high level of omega-3 fatty acids. Symptoms of mercury poisoning include stomach cramping, diarrhea, and vomiting. Allergies
Experiencing stomach cramps after ingesting a certain food or supplement could also be a sign of a food allergy. Shellfish are among the most common triggers of a food allergy, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The immune system is designed to defend the body against potentially harmful substances entering the body. A food allergy is triggered when the immune system mistakes a certain food for a harmful substance and causes an allergic reaction. Symptoms of food allergies include abdominal pain, diarrhea, stomach cramps, swelling of the mouth and lips, and vomiting.
