To determine if the walking belt on your Proform treadmill should be tightened, slide your hands underneath either side of the walking belt--with the machine turned off and unplugged, of course--and gently lift up. It should lift up about 3 to 4 inches. If it comes up further, or slips when you're walking on it, the belt needs to be tightened. Making small adjustments like this is a natural part of troubleshooting a treadmill during consistent use.
Step 1
Unplug the treadmill.
Step 2
Locate the rear roller bolts, which are located to either side of the walking belt on the very rear of the treadmill frame.
Step 3
Insert the hex key or Allen wrench that came with the treadmill into each of the roller bolts in turn and rotate each bolt 1/4 turn clockwise. Be careful not to pull the belt off-center as you do this.
Step 4
Slide your hands underneath the treadmill belt, on both sides, and lift up gently. If it comes up more than 3 or 4 inches, or if the belt continues to slip when the treadmill is in use, you should tighten the bolts evenly again, in 1/4-turn increments.
