Hydration during pregnancy is a serious business. You and your growing fetus require eight to 12 8-ounce glasses of water or other fluids each day. You may need even more if you sweat a lot during exercise or warm weather. You can replace some of the recommended water in your diet with pomegranate juice to satisfy your requirements and sweet tooth.
During the first and second trimesters of your pregnancy, you require roughly 2,000 calories per day; increase your caloric intake in the third trimester to approximately 2,200 calories daily. An 8-ounce serving of pomegranate juice contains 136 calories, so take care not to drink too much in a day; replacing all the water you need with this juice introduces 1,088 calories into your diet. While pomegranate juice is nutritious, during pregnancy you need a varied diet to get the vitamins and minerals you need.
A serving of pomegranate juice contains 26.1 micrograms of vitamin K, a considerable portion of the 90 micrograms of this vitamin you need each day when you are pregnant. The vitamin K in your diet promotes normal blood clotting and bone strength, both in you and your fetus, so it is critical to take in adequate amounts. Drinking pomegranate juice can help you do that, particularly if you consume it in a meal rich in vitamin K-rich foods, such as parsley.
The vitamin folate is an important nutrient for pregnant women, and each serving of pomegranate juice provides 60 micrograms. You need 600 micrograms per day of folate when you are pregnant, although even 400 micrograms per day is useful for reducing your risk of giving birth to a baby with neural tube birth defects.
Include 8 ounces of pomegranate juice in your diet when you’re pregnant, and you take in 538 milligrams of potassium. Pregnant women require 4,700 milligrams of potassium each day. The potassium in this juice may help prevent leg cramps, and it also keeps your nerves and muscles functioning appropriately. It also influences fluid levels in your body – since pregnancy triggers a rise in blood content, you need more potassium.
Drinking pomegranate juice while you are pregnant may protect the fetal brain from injury. A study published in the June 2005 issue of “Pediatric Research” indicates that fetal mice from pregnant models fed pomegranate juice before suffering oxygen deprivation demonstrated less brain tissue loss. Human studies are needed to confirm these findings.
