Creatine supplements are commonly used to improve exercise performance and muscle mass. The supplement is used in weight lifting and older people to help maintain muscle mass. With the introduction of any new substance into your body there is always the risk of developing an allergic reaction. Facial swelling is an alarming symptom that may be a sign that you are having a severe allergic reaction. Call your doctor immediately, stop using the supplement and wait to take creatine again until you can be seen by your doctor.

Creatine

Creatine is a chemical that is found in the human body that helps build and repair muscle tissue. It is commonly found in the liver, kidneys and muscles. Creatine supplements are commonly made from animal meat and fish. If you have a known fish or meat allergy, you need to talk with your doctor before using creatine. Drugs.com recommends that when using creatine, drink plenty of fluid to prevent dehydration. This supplement has not been reviewed by the FDA and should be taken under the direction of your health care provider.

Allergic Reactions

Although rare, Drugs.com states that creatine can lead to an allergic reaction. A puffy face is a sign of a severe allergic reaction that may lead to death. This type of allergic reaction causes extreme levels of various chemicals to form in your soft tissues, such as in your lungs, sinuses and digestive system. A severe allergic reaction is called anaphylaxis that commonly leads to shock, producing life-threatening symptoms. During anaphylaxis your tissues release a chemical called histamine that causes your muscles and soft tissues to tighten and inflame.

Facial Swelling

Facial swelling from a severe allergic reaction will cause your symptoms to develop within a matter of seconds. You may notice that you lips, mouth, tongue and throat swell at the same time. This may lead to shortness of breath, high-pitched sounds from your throat and your heart rate may increase. The swelling may begin suddenly or it may get worse over a period of time. Hives commonly develop along with the swelling. Hives are welts that are red in color and flat on the skin's surface. You may need emergency medical attention and you should not attempt to take any medication if you have a puffy face.

Considerations

Not all symptoms from using creatine are related to an allergic reaction. Do not use this supplement if you have diabetes or kidney disease, according to Medline Plus. Weight gain is a common side effect of taking creatine and may cause an irregular heart beat in some people, although there isn't enough information to confirm this concern.
