Yoga is a relaxing and healthy practice that many people around the world enjoy. Getting away for a yoga holiday is an attractive option for practitioners, aspiring yoga teachers and those new to the discipline. Whether you prefer a tropical, exotic, rustic or local destination there is a yoga retreat or training program for you.

Tropical

If rain forests and beaches are to your fancy then consider a tropical yoga retreat. To suit this need Gayot, an international reviewers of travel and dining, recommends: Jangala Retreat (jangalaretreat.com) in Peru; Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat (sivanandabahamas.org) in the Bahamas and Maya Tulum (mayatulum.com) in Mexico. Bali, Thailand and Costa Rica are other popular tropical destinations. Yogis indulging in these retreats are refreshed by the sea and the sun -- practicing yoga on the beach and eating local vegetables and fish.

Exotic

To get a real flavor for yoga, try an exotic retreat to its birthplace of India. The Shreyas Yoga Retreat (shreyasretreat.com) offers an upscale experience, while places like Satsanga Retreat (eltonyoga.com) in Goa offer intensive teacher training. Retreat programs, like the one offered through the Himalayan Yoga Institute (himalayanyogainstitute.com), provide an opportunity to become emerged in village life and benefit from other service such as meditation, dance workshops, lifestyle coaching and nutrition advice.

Rustic

With mountains and trees surrounding you, there are yoga retreats in Domaine de la Grausse (yogafrance.com) in France, Paradise Found Yoga (paradisefoundyoga.com) retreat to Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Anahata Yoga Retreat (anahata-retreat.org) in New Zealand and Clare Island Yoga Retreat Centre (yogaretreats.ie/index.htm) in Ireland. These retreats offer clean air and beautiful, natural scenery for inspiration. Many combine yoga experiences with other outdoor activities, such as hiking.

Local - U.S.

For a retreat closer to home try the Big Sky Yoga Retreat in Montana (bigskyyogaretreats.com), which offers the unique "cowgirl yoga" and pairs yoga with horse riding and skiing. Or head south for the Yoga and Meditation Retreat (emotionalhealingsystem.com) in Miami. Some yoga organizations, such as yoga works (yogaworks.com), offer teacher training around the U.S. and plan intensive, residential teacher trainings at exotic locations around the world, giving participants many options.
