Obesity is an epidemic in the United States, and it is the second-leading cause of preventable death in the country. With more than 60 million American adults obese, dietary supplements have become increasingly popular. Certain supplements such as Hydroxycut Max are designed for certain demographics -- in this case, women. While Hydroxycut Max may be effective, you should closely examine the ingredients and consult a doctor to ensure safety.

Vitamins

Hydroxycut Max for women is low in vitamins, with just 12 percent of the daily suggested intake of vitamin C. Although vitamin C may enhance your immune system, research from the January 2008 issue of "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" suggests that vitamin C supplementation can inhibit the beneficial effects of exercise, including improved endurance capacity and muscle recovery.

Minerals

Hydroxycut Max for women contains several minerals, folic acid, calcium and iron. While a study published in the January 2010 edition of the "International Journal of Obesity" found that calcium could encourage fat loss, the study used 1500 mg of calcium daily; each dose of Hydroxycut Max contains just 50 mg.

Max! HydroxyBoost

Hydroxycut Max for women contains several groups of ingredients, such as the Max! HydroxyBoost group, which contains caffeine and two amino acids, L-alanine and L-serine. While caffeine can aid in boosting your daily energy expenditure by increasing your metabolism, too much caffeine can be harmful and cause nausea, nervousness, dizziness and irritability. Because Hydroxycut Max for women doesn't reveal the amount of caffeine in each serving, you should avoid other caffeine-containing products while taking this supplement.

Max! ProDefine

The Max! ProDefine ingredient group contains several herbal extracts such as wild mint leaf, lady's mantle leaf and wild olive leaf. Research from the May 2010 issue of "The Journal of Nutrition" suggests that olive leaf extract may help reduce body fat, but this study was performed in rats consuming a high-fat, high-carbohydrate diet, which is significantly different than reduced-calorie diets used for weight loss.

Max! Hydroxagen

The Max! Hydroxagen ingredient group contains co-enzyme Q10 as well as several amino acids, including L-threonine and L-isoleucine. According to research from the March 2010 issue of "The Journal of Nutrition", supplementation of L-isoleucine may help reduce body weight and body fat mass.
