Mongoose Crossway 625 bikes come with narrow tires mounted on narrow rims. Unlike typical valve stems on wider bike rims and automobile rims, Mongoose 625 rims have Presta valves that operate by depressing the entire valve stem. Inflating a Crossway 625 tire for the first time can be tricky, but once the valve is open, you inflate the tire in the same way as other bicycle tires.

Step 1

Unscrew the valve stem cap by hand and set it aside.

Step 2

Loosen the locknut at the base of the valve stem by hand. Continue to unscrew the nut until it stops. You will notice the valve stem can be pushed down, which opens the valve.

Step 3

Screw the Presta valve adapter securely into the valve stem threads by hand.

Step 4

Attach a tire pump or bicycle pump inflator fitting onto the end of the valve stem. Push down lightly on the valve stem as you inflate the tire to the recommended pressure. Typically, the recommended pressure is written on the sidewall of the tire.

Step 5

Detach the pump fitting and unscrew the adapter by hand. Screw the locknut down to the base of the stem and tighten it by hand. Reattach the valve stem cap by hand.

Tips and Warnings

  • Loosen the locknut with a small metric wrench, if necessary. Tighten the nut by hand, instead of using the wrench. Consult your service manual or a bike shop when the recommended tire pressure is not given on the tire.

Things You'll Need

  • Presta valve adapter
  • Tire pump or bicycle pump
