Running is an intense physical activity that requires a lot of energy for endurance and peak performance. Whether you are training or running a marathon, running or energy gels are important because they provide an efficient source of carbohydrates that help prevent muscle fatigue and may help improve performance.

About Energy Gels

Energy gels are a fast-acting blend of simple and complex carbohydrates that are easy to digest when you run. According to the magazine Running Times, gels provide more energy per ounce than sports drinks and are easier for your body to digest than solid foods. Gels not only delay muscle fatigue, but they raise your blood sugar, which maximizes performance. Gels are available in various flavors and also contain electrolytes, such as potassium and sodium. Some energy gels even contain small amounts of caffeine that have been shown to improve performance. There are many types of gels and it is up to the runners to find an energy gel that works best for them.

Carbohydrates and Exercise

Carbohydrates are the most important type of fuel, providing energy for exercise. Carbohydrates are stored as glycogen in your muscles and liver. Denise Feeley, M.S., R.D., writes that 300 to 400 g are stored as glycogen, which is about 1,200 to 1,600 calories that can be used as energy. Energy gels are important because they contain an adequate amount of carbohydrates that your body needs and quickly uses during training or an actual running event.

How to Use

Consume energy gel about 15 minutes before starting a run and every 30 to 45 minutes once the run starts, according to Half Marathon Running. The amount you consume depends on your metabolism, body makeup and level of fitness. If you begin to feel weak before you use gel again, it is OK to consume some energy gel early. To enhance digestion and absorption and minimize cramping, drink some water along with gel consumption. A convenient place to store energy gel packs while you run is in the pouch of a hydration pack or belt.

Where to Find

You can find and purchase energy gels in many varieties at sports stores, running stores or online. Once you find an energy gel that works for you that you like, you can order the product online and have a steady supply coming your way.
